Ivan covers how to identify and remember commonly used first-position areas of the fret board in the key of G--which will help you find a melody easily on a standard bluegrass song--and how to incorporate rolls, slides, hammer-ons/pull-offs, and other essential dobro techniques to create a coherent and interesting bluegrass solo, mostly just using the first 5 frets. It really goes through the process of why notes are chosen and why/how certain rolls and licks work in the context of actual songs. Ivan shares some of his own unique roll patterns that define his style. Accompanying tabs available on the Tab page of this site. The DVD covers a lot of fundamentals that many experienced players inadvertantly skipped over on the way to the fancy licks, so most students of the dobro--beginner to advanced--should get some valuable ideas from the DVD. |
